The Telegraph Plant (Desmondium Gyrans)

Charles Darwin is the author of the origins of species, this book was published in 1859. Hooker a good friend of Charles Darwin was the director of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, this housed thousands of plants rare and common. on a tour of a northeast Indian State that sits in the Himalayan foothill Hook discovered a rare treasure of a plant, he sent this plant back to Kew.

Charles Darwin began studying the Desmondium Gyrans in the early 1855's, he was fascinated by the plants movements of the little leaflets Darwin said  “I do hope it is not very precious,” Darwin wrote, thanking Hooker for the loan, “for, as I told you, it is for probably a most foolish purpose. I read somewhere that no plant closes its leaves so promptly in darkness, and I want to cover it up daily for half an hour, and see if I can teach it to close by itself.” More than 20 years later, Darwin was still trying.”

The telegraph plants leaflets move like antenna, these small leaves move to locate the best light, once the best light is found the larger leafs slowly move in a jerking motion to face the found light
